Participants start by traveling about 45 minutes by vehicle from San Ignacio to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve ranger post. From there, the group hikes through the jungle for roughly 45 minutes to reach the entrance of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. To enter the cave, travelers swim across a clear, spring-fed pool, with life jackets provided for non-swimmers who are supported by guides. Inside the cave, guests spend about three hours walking through a series of tunnels, passageways, and chambers. The cave contains geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, along with ancient Maya artifacts and ceremonial items. Notable is the crystallized skeleton known as the “Crystal Maiden,” along with remains of 13 other sacrificed individuals. The cave tour is led by a specially licensed guide with experience leading government and international officials.
