Overview

This 7 to 8 hour tour starts with a visit to Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in 1284 by Saint Abune Tekle Haymanot. The monastery is located in a steep river canyon and includes a cave church. The current church building has a domed roof with stained-glass windows and remains an active pilgrimage site. The visit lasts about one hour. Next, the tour stops at the Portuguese Bridge, a narrow stone-arch bridge built in the 1890s in the style of old Portuguese bridges. The bridge crosses a gorge where a cascade flows beneath it during the rainy season. Afterward, the route continues to the Jemma River Gorge, the starting point of the African Great Rift Valley. The road descends steeply to the Blue Nile Gorge, which lies about one kilometer below, offering views of the landscape and two bridges crossing the river. Visitors may see gelada baboons near the gorge, though sightings are not guaranteed. The tour then passes by Entoto Maryam Church, the first church built in the Addis Ababa area, known for its traditional Ethiopian church architecture and quiet setting. The final stop is at Mount Entoto, situated at nearly 3,300 meters above sea level, where visitors can view large sections of Addis Ababa spread out below. The tour includes local guides, ground transportation with a car and driver, pickup and drop-off anywhere in Addis Ababa, lunch with bottled water and hot drinks, entrance fees to museums and churches, and an English-speaking guide. Alcoholic drinks, personal expenses, and gratuities are not included.

Debre Libanos Orthodox Church

The original church was destroyed by the Italian army in 1937, killing 800 monks and worshippers. The present church has a domed roof with stained-glass windows and remains a pilgrimage site.
