Overview

This tour in the Anchorage area of Alaska begins with a helicopter flight over glaciers and icebergs. The round-trip flight lasts about 30 minutes and often provides views of wildlife such as moose, black bears, Dall sheep, and goats. The helicopter lands on a large snowfield high on a glacier, where guests spend one hour with a team of champion sled dogs and their mushers who live there throughout the summer. During this time, participants have the option to stand on the runners and guide their own dog team for a 30-minute sled ride on real snow or sit on the sled and let the mushers control the dogs. After the sled ride, there is time to meet the dogs that pulled the sled, hear stories about long-distance sled dog races exceeding 1,000 miles, and take photographs with the dogs. The helicopter then returns to the lodge, flying over lower glaciers where blue melt pools and crevasses are visible. The total tour time is approximately 1.5 hours and includes the helicopter flight, the dogsled experience, and waterproof overboots to keep feet dry during the sled portion. Participants should dress in layers with a waterproof outer shell, as the glacier area is cold and wet even in summer. Van transfers to the departure location are not included but can be arranged for an additional fee.
