Overview

This full-day bus tour lasts about 10 to 12 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Cairo. Travel by air-conditioned car to Alexandria with an optional Egyptologist guide. The tour begins with a visit to the Library of Alexandria, home to around 8 million books and featuring statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I in the open courtyard. Note that the library is closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays; entry to the reading area requires a ticket purchase. Next, explore the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the largest Roman cemetery carved into rock across three levels. Then, there is a photo stop by Pompey's Pillar, a monument honoring Emperor Diocletian built in the late 4th century. Walk outside the Ancient Roman Amphitheater and nearby excavation sites including Roman villas and Alexandria's Great Tomb, with the guide providing historical context but no interior access. Visit Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, the oldest church in Africa. Drive through Mansheya’s old market area, known for its narrow streets and traditional women’s markets, including a gold market famous for wedding and engagement jewelry. Pass the Alexandria Unknown Naval Soldier Memorial. Stop at Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the largest mosque in Alexandria, for photos and walk by Egypt’s oldest funfair. Continue to the corniche and old harbor to observe traditional fishing boats and fishermen. View the exterior of Quaitbay Castle, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, offering a notable photo opportunity. Finally, visit Montaza Gardens and Palaces, once the royal grounds of King Farouk, including the Haramlek and Salamlek palaces. Walk along the Montaza bridge to Tea Palace island and see the royal beaches. Return comfortably to your hotel in Cairo. Lunch is included if selected in the tour options.
