Overview

Alexandria features a range of historical sites, monuments, and gardens reflecting its diverse past. This full-day bus tour lasts about 7 to 8 hours and covers key landmarks around the city. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. The tour begins with a visit inside the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a large Roman cemetery carved into three rock-cut levels. Next, there is a photo stop at Pompey’s Pillar, a Roman triumphal column built in the late 4th century in honor of Emperor Diocletian. The group will then walk past the excavation site of the Old Roman City of Alexandria, viewing Roman villas, amphitheater ruins, the Great Tomb excavation site, and other ruins from outside while the guide explains their history. The visit continues to the Library of Alexandria, the largest library in the world, where guests can see the open court with statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I, found underwater nearby. The President Sadat Museum and the Impressions of Alexandria Museum are also included. Note that the library is closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays; entry to the reading area requires a separate ticket. The tour proceeds with a photo stop at Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the largest mosque in the city, followed by a visit to the corniche and old harbor area where traditional fishing boats, fishermen, and net makers can be observed. After this, there is a photo stop outside Qaitbay Castle, built on the original site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The route includes a stop at the Alexandria Unknown Naval Soldier Memorial, originally a memorial to Khedive Ismail, honoring unknown sailors lost at sea. Then, the car takes visitors to Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, the oldest church in Africa, passing through old downtown areas with baroque, Italian, and French architectural styles. On the way back, the tour passes Stanley Bridge, a modern landmark of Alexandria. The final stop is Montazah Gardens, the royal gardens of King Farouk, Egypt’s last king, including a photo break by his palace and exploration of the royal beaches once used by queens. The tour is conducted by bus with all transfers in an air-conditioned vehicle. Entrance tickets, expert guides, and lunch are included only if selected when booking.
