Overview

This private day tour explores the Atlas Mountains and three key valleys near Marrakech: Ourika, Sidi Fares, and Asni. The trip begins around 9 am with a hotel pickup and travel east from Marrakech along the Ourika Valley, a 30-mile stretch following the Ourika River. The guide will pause for mint tea by a mountain stream and may stop at a local Berber market if it coincides with the day. The route includes off-road driving on foothills, passing several Berber villages where guests can stop for photos or to learn about local life. The tour encourages bringing spare clothes, shoes, or school supplies to distribute to Berber children encountered along the way. After climbing above 2,000 meters altitude, the group leaves the main road to follow an ancient Berber track to the Sidi Fares Valley, known for its apple orchards. Lunch is served in a Berber family house overlooking the mountains, featuring homemade dishes such as tomato salad or soup, Berber chicken tajine, couscous, fruit for dessert, mint tea, and water. Vegetarian meals are available with 24 hours' notice. Following lunch, the tour continues to the greener Asni Valley, with orchards lining the road and views of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 meters, often capped with snow. An optional camel ride lasting about 20 minutes is available for an extra fee, paid directly to the camel owners. Guests can also choose to take a short hike of 20 minutes to one hour in a nearby open area, visit a Women’s Argan Oil Cooperative, or explore a weekly local market (except Wednesdays when there is no market). The trip is conducted in an air-conditioned minivan or 4WD with an English-speaking guide and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, drinks including bottled water, mint tea, coffee, and all local taxes. The tour lasts about 7 to 9 hours and operates with small groups to provide personalized attention.

High Atlas Mountains

The tour begins with a 9 am pickup from the hotel or riad in Marrakech and heads east towards the High Atlas Mountains. The route crosses several villages and follows the Ourika Valley for about 30 miles along the Ourika River, which never runs dry and offers whitewater rafting in summer. There is a mint tea break by a mountain stream. If it is a local Berber market day, the group may stop to visit it. The journey continues off-road at a leisurely pace through foothills, with stops possible for photos or to meet villagers. At an altitude over 2000 meters, the main road is left to follow an ancient, partly paved Berber track to the Sidi Fares Valley, known for apple trees. Lunch is served in a Berber house overlooking the Atlas Mountains, featuring homemade organic dishes such as tomato salad, chicken tagine, couscous, and fruit. Vegetarian options are available with 24 hours' notice. After lunch, the tour proceeds to the greener Asni Valley with orchards along the way and views of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4167 meters.
