This morning boat tour lasts about two and a half to three hours in Costa Rica’s Central Pacific, focusing on whale and dolphin watching in Bahia Ballena. After checking in at the operator’s office, you take a 15-minute walk through Marino Ballena National Park to reach the beach where the boat departs. The boat seats 24 people and travels about 15 miles offshore. The tour visits key marine areas near Isla Ballena and the Three Sisters bird sanctuary. From October to June, guests can snorkel in the clear waters near Isla Ballena or the Whale’s Tail. Between July and September, when water visibility is lower, swimming in the warm Pacific Ocean replaces snorkeling. Throughout the year, you’ll have chances to see spinner, spotted, rough-toothed, and bottlenose dolphins. During the humpback whale migration, you can watch whales from the Southern Hemisphere (July to October) and from the Northern Hemisphere (December to April). The tour ends with a coastal ride past several beaches, including Playa Pinuelas, Playa Pinales, Playa Arco, and Playa Colonia, before returning to Uvita Beach where it began. Bottled water, snacks, and snorkeling gear are included. On-site parking is available, but the boat does not have restrooms.

Parque Nacional Marino Ballena
The tour starts with a short walk from the office to the entrance of Marino Ballena National Park. The boat departs from the beach inside the park.

This natural landmark at Marino Ballena National Park is formed by converging currents and is a popular Costa Rican attraction. From here, the boat heads further into the ocean to search for dolphins and whales.
Bahia Ballena Offshore
The boat explores the greater Bahia Ballena area looking for marine wildlife. From July to October, Southern Hemisphere humpback whales migrate here from Antarctica. From December to April, Northern Hemisphere humpback whales travel from the US west coast. Dolphins including spinner, spotted, rough-toothed, and bottlenose species can be spotted year-round.

The tour visits Isla Ballena, part of the protected Bahia Ballena area. Depending on the season and conditions, guests can snorkel in clear water from late November to April. During the other months, guests can swim in the warm Pacific Ocean.
