Overview

This walking tour lasts about three and a half hours and takes place in Beijing's oldest neighborhood, the hutong alleys. It begins at Shichahai metro station where you meet an English-speaking guide. You walk roughly 1.5 miles (2.5 km) through historic alleyways while stopping at four local family-run eateries that are not commonly known to tourists. The first food stop is near Drum Tower Park, where you try local hotpot served in traditional copper pots with clear broth, thin slices of mutton and beef cooked quickly at your table, and a pint of locally brewed craft beer. Next, you visit a restaurant run by a husband and wife that serves spring pancakes, a dish eaten during Chinese New Year to mark spring and family reunion. These pancakes are made fresh to order and eaten like a burrito. The final stop is at the Yan family’s home, over 100 years old, hidden inside a hutong courtyard. Here you taste their secret recipe for "Beijing Noodles," a noodle dish favored by locals. The tour includes unlimited beer and sodas, the four food stops which together make up a dinner-sized meal, and a small group size of fewer than 12 people.
