by Imu Mea Ai Food Tour Hawaii
This four-hour hands-on cooking and cultural experience takes place on the Big Island of Hawaii. The activity centers on building and using an imu, a traditional Hawaiian underground oven. Participants assist in preparing traditional Hawaiian dishes as part of the cooking process. The event is led by native Hawaiian guides from Men of PA'A, a nonprofit organization that supports Native Hawaiian men through cultural and community work. The experience emphasizes Hawaiian values related to the land and stewardship. Bottled water, lunch, and a guide are provided during the activity. Gratuities are not included.
Imu-Building and Traditional Cooking
Participants learn the traditional Hawaiian method of preparing food using an imu, an underground oven made from natural materials. They take part in constructing the imu from the beginning, under the guidance of native Hawaiians with generational knowledge. Once the imu is uncovered, the group shares a backyard-style meal featuring slow-cooked kalua pig and other local dishes. This experience combines food preparation with cultural practice.
