Overview

This five-hour hiking tour explores volcanic landscapes on the Big Island of Hawaii, focusing on Kona’s Hualalai volcano. Participants walk about four miles through native Hawaiian cloud forests and cross a lava tube. The trail leads to large fissures and craters formed during Kona’s most recent eruption. Along the way, hikers reach viewpoints over 5,000 feet above the Kona coastline. The hike begins at the Kailua-Kona headquarters, where guests check in 15 minutes before departure. After a 30-minute drive, the group accesses private land behind three locked gates on Hualalai’s upper slopes. The guide provides naturalist commentary during the walk. Included in the tour are walking sticks, daypacks, rain gear, snacks, refillable filtered water, juices, sparkling flavored waters, and all access fees. The terrain is uneven and rocky with up to 1,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. Closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots are required, and guests are advised to wear shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, and bring a light sweatshirt or jacket. This tour is not recommended for children under 8, or for those with back or neck issues. Cruise ship guests cannot participate due to scheduling limits. Gratuities and hotel transportation are not included.
