Overview

This guided kayak tour departs from San Juan and lasts about five and a half hours, including travel time and the kayaking portion. Participants are picked up from select locations in San Juan such as Old San Juan, Condado, and Isla Verde, with other pickup points available for an additional fee. The tour begins with a drive of approximately two to two and a half hours to the bioluminescent bay known as Laguna Grande, located within a natural reserve. Upon arrival, participants receive a kayaking orientation and safety instructions before boarding two-person kayaks equipped with quality gear, including sizes suitable for children. The kayaking segment involves paddling about 30 minutes each way through mangrove channels to reach the area of the bay where bioluminescence is most visible. During the kayak trip, a guide provides commentary on the local flora and fauna. Once at Laguna Grande, the guide explains how the bioluminescent organisms, Pyrodinium Bahamense, produce natural light when the water is disturbed. Participants can observe this effect by touching the water, but swimming is not allowed. The kayaking portion lasts approximately two hours in total. Bottled water is provided. Participants must meet weight restrictions and health requirements to join and should be prepared to paddle and remain seated for about two hours. The tour operates in most weather conditions but may be canceled in case of thunderstorms or severe weather. It is recommended to wear a bathing suit and bring a towel and extra clothes, as getting wet is likely. Electronic devices should be kept to a minimum and protected in waterproof cases if brought along. The tour does not include food stops, and the visibility of the bioluminescence can vary due to natural factors such as moon phase and weather.
