The Blackwater Rafting tours in Waitomo Caves take you through the natural underground streamways of Ruakuri Cave, famous for its glowworms. There are two tour options available. The Black Labyrinth is a 3-hour rafting trip where participants float on tubes, jump off two small waterfalls up to 1.5 meters high, and travel beneath glowworm displays. This tour requires participants to be at least 12 years old and weigh 45 kilograms or more. The Black Abyss is a longer, 5-hour tour that includes abseiling 35 meters into the cave and a zipline crossing over a river under a glowworm grotto before tubing through the cave’s stream. Participants must be at least 16 years old and also weigh at least 45 kilograms for this tour. Both tours require an average level of fitness and mobility, and guides have the final decision on participation. The tour is conducted on tubes with wetsuits, boots, helmets, and all necessary safety and abseiling equipment provided. The operator offers abseiling training as part of the Black Abyss tour. Snacks are included, and after the trip, participants can use complimentary hot showers and enjoy soup at the base. Participants check in at The Legendary Blackwater Rafting Co. where lockers are available to store belongings. Cameras and personal devices are not permitted on the tours. Swimwear and towels are recommended; other gear will be supplied.

After the cave tours, participants return here to use the free hot showers and enjoy a serving of soup before departing.
