by A Chef's Tour
This four-hour Cairo Nights Food Tour takes place mainly in the backstreets of Old Cairo, an area rarely visited by tourists. A licensed guide leads a small group of up to eight guests through local eateries that have served the community for generations. The tour includes more than 15 tastings of Egyptian dishes such as smoky charcoal-grilled koftas, fateer pastries, pickled vegetables from a two-century-old factory, fava bean falafels, spiced kushari, zesty aubergines, crisp-fried shrimps, freshly baked flatbreads, slow-cooked lamb, and coffee from local roasters. Bottled water and dinner are provided during the tour. Alcoholic drinks and transportation to and from the meeting point are not included.
Cairo
This stop covers the entire four-hour tour through Old Cairo's backstreets, focusing on local food spots away from tourist areas like Khan-el-Khalili. The guide leads the group to eateries known for smoky charcoal-grilled koftas, pickled vegetables from a factory over 200 years old, fateer pastries, spiced kushari, fava bean falafels distinct from other Middle Eastern versions, aubergines, crisp-fried shrimps, flatbreads, coffee roasting locations, and slow-cooked lamb. The tour offers a cultural look at these traditional venues and their food, which most visitors do not find on their own.
