Overview

This 3-hour private tour takes place inside Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle. A Navajo guide leads the group through the canyon, visiting several archaeological sites and rock art panels. Stops include Kokopelli Cave with its pictographs, Newspaper Rock and Petroglyph Rock featuring petroglyph panels, and prehistoric Puebloan ruins such as First Ruin and Junction Ruin. The tour also visits White House Ruin and Ledge Ruin in Canyon del Muerto, both known for their ruins and rock art. At each site, the guide explains the meaning of the rock art, dates of occupation, archaeological details, and the history of the canyon’s inhabitants, including oral traditions. The natural rock formations, plants, and wildlife along the route provide the setting for the tour. Time spent at each location may vary depending on conditions and guest interest, but the guide manages the schedule to cover as many sites as possible within the three hours. If guests spend extra time browsing local arts and crafts vendors or at stops, some sites may be skipped to maintain the schedule. Extended tours can be arranged for an additional fee by contacting the operator. The tour includes a sanitation fee. Lunch, bottled water, gratuities, and government fees are not included.
