Overview

This 3-hour gastronomic walking street food tour in Catania starts at Piazza del Duomo, where participants spend about 20 minutes viewing the Baroque cathedral and learning about its history. The tour continues to A' Piscaria Mercato del Pesce, the fish market, for around 40 minutes. Here, participants taste local cheeses, olives, high-quality olive oil, and fresh mixed fried fish. Next, the group walks for 10 minutes along Via dei Crociferi to see its churches and hear about their role in the Festa of Sant'Agata, the city's patron saint celebration. The tour then proceeds to Piazza Stesicoro for 15 minutes to visit the Roman amphitheater ruins. Afterwards, the group follows Via Etnea, the main street of Catania, for about 40 minutes, stopping at Bar Savia to try the city's famous arancini and at Bakery Pacini to sample cipollina, a local puff pastry filled with tomato, onion, mozzarella, and ham. The final stop is Market Fera O’Luni, the largest market in Catania, where participants spend 40 minutes tasting a traditional fizzy drink made from fresh Selz and syrups at Chiosco Costa. Bottled water, snacks, and all food tastings are included. A professional guide leads the tour. An optional evening tour starts at 5:00 PM. This evening version begins with a visit to the Benedictine Monastery, followed by an aperitif featuring horse meat and wine at Ursino Castle at sunset. The tour ends in Piazza Duomo with arancino and a selection of Sicilian pastries such as ricotta cannolo, cassatella, and almond paste during winter or Sicilian granita in summer. Gratuities are not included. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
