Overview

The Charlottetown 1.5-hour Harbour Experience takes place on North America's largest solar-powered boat, a 1967 Canadian Heritage vessel renovated over eight years. Guests should arrive 30 minutes before the tour begins. The covered boat features large windows by every seat and roof hatches that let sunlight in, offering a quiet, emission-free ride through the sheltered waters of Charlottetown Harbour. The captain provides live commentary throughout the 90-minute trip, explaining the history of Charlottetown Harbour, known as the Cradle of Confederation, and the Mi'kmaq people who first settled the area. The boat passes several notable sites in order: Victoria Park with its historic cannons; the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour and Port-la-Joye at Fort Amherst; Government House, where the Canadian provinces first agreed to form the country; several waterfront homes in Stratford, including a multi-million-dollar house illustrating shoreline protection issues; Peake's Wharf near St. Dunstan's Basilica; the Basilica itself, the tallest structure in Charlottetown and a National Historic Site; and the Beaconsfield Historic House, built in 1877. Onboard amenities include WiFi, four video screens with French and Italian subtitles, live music, trivia games with prizes, restrooms, and booth seating for comfort. Guests may walk around the boat, explore memorabilia from the 1967 Montreal Expo for which the boat was originally built, and even steer the vessel. Food and drink options are available for purchase onboard but are not included in the tour.
