Overview

This is an eight-hour day cruise from Manapouri into the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound, located in Fiordland National Park. The trip starts with a 45-minute cruise across Lake Manapouri, passing islands and mountain views. At West Arm, passengers leave the boat and board a coach for a 45-minute drive over Wilmot Pass. The coach climbs 671 meters through dense rainforest and stops for photos of Pātea Doubtful Sound when visible. Next is a two-hour cruise along 40 kilometers of Doubtful Sound’s waterways. This fiord is home to bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, and in season, Fiordland crested penguins. During the cruise, the vessel’s engines are turned off to experience the "Sound of Silence," where only birdsong can be heard. Live commentary is provided throughout the cruise. The return journey includes a 45-minute coach ride back over Wilmot Pass and a 45-minute cruise on Lake Manapouri to the visitor center. Food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, are available to purchase on board. A picnic lunch can be pre-ordered directly with the supplier after booking. Guests should arrive 20 minutes before departure to check in. The tour operates in all weather conditions. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Comfortable shoes, warm clothing, and rain gear are recommended.
