Overview

Edinburgh Castle has stood as a key Scottish fortress for nearly 3,000 years and served as a royal residence from the 12th century, including during the reign of King David I and the birth of King James VI. This walking tour begins on the Royal Mile and leads to the castle entrance. The guide will explain the castle’s origins, its role in historic sieges, and its significance through the centuries. Inside the castle grounds, the tour covers various outdoor areas of the fortress, including the Chapel of Saint Margaret, the Great Hall from the 16th century where feasts were once held, and the Royal Palace where Mary Queen of Scots lived. The tour also passes by the National Monument to Scotland’s fallen, two prisons, a canine cemetery, and three museums. The entire tour lasts about 90 minutes and takes place outside; entry inside buildings is not included during the guided portion. After the guided walk, there is free time to explore the castle grounds and enter the museums, palace, and other interior buildings independently until the castle closes. The tour follows designated stops approved by castle authorities. Bags larger than 30 liters are not permitted inside the castle. Only guide dogs are allowed; other pets are prohibited.
