Overview

This full-day bus and boat tour begins with a one-hour cruise from Kardamena port on Kos to the volcanic island of Nisyros. Upon arrival, a bus will take visitors to the Polivotis crater, the largest of the volcano’s craters, measuring 260 meters across and 30 meters deep. The volcano is active and is the youngest in Greece. The landscape includes volcanic rock formations such as basalt, which have been used in local buildings like the Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos near Nikia. The volcanic valley around the crater is 2,400 meters long and 950 meters wide. Visitors can spend about 30 minutes exploring the crater area, where volcanic mud and pyroclastic deposits cover the ground. After visiting the volcano, the tour continues with a stop in Mandraki, the main town of Nisyros. Here, guests have three hours to walk through narrow streets with blue and white houses, have lunch (not included), shop, or visit the Panagia Spiliani monastery. The tour ends with a 4:00 pm boat ride back to Kos. The tour includes transfer to the volcano, transport to Kardamena port, and a tour escort or host. Food, drinks, volcano entrance fees, and gratuities are not included. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for walking around the crater and bring sun protection and summer clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Nisyros Volcano

Nisyros hosts Greece’s youngest active volcano, like those at Methana, Milos, and Santorini. The island is mostly mountainous and volcanic, formed by lava and covered with pyroclastic deposits and volcanic mud. Volcanic rocks such as basalt have been used in buildings like Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos near Nikia. Two eruptions possibly occurred about 25,000 years ago. The largest crater, Polivotis, is 260 meters in diameter and 30 meters deep. There are five younger craters, the biggest being Stefanos, 30 meters wide and 30 meters deep. The valley around the volcano measures 2,400 meters long and 950 meters wide.
