Overview

Giethoorn is a village in the Netherlands known for its canals and lack of main roads, giving it the nickname "Dutch Venice." This small-group day tour lasts about nine hours and starts with hotel pickup in Amsterdam for groups of two or more. Travelers head first to Zaanse Schans, a recreated 18th- and 19th-century village featuring green wooden houses and traditional windmills. There, the guide leads visits to a cheese farm where cheese-making is demonstrated and tasted, and a wooden shoe factory with a clog-making workshop where participants can try on clogs. A photo stop by the Zaan River offers views of the windmills. On the way to Giethoorn, the guide shares information about the IJsselmeer, the largest artificial lake in the Netherlands, and the Afsluitdijk, a 32-kilometer dike built between 1927 and 1932 as part of the Delta Works. The route also passes Ketelbrug, an 800-meter bridge and dike opened in 1970. In Giethoorn, the group takes a guided small electric boat cruise lasting about one hour with a maximum of nine people per boat. Guests can drive the boat themselves under guidance, moving through canals lined with over 150 arch-shaped wooden bridges and traditional thatched-roof houses. The tour uses a coach or van for transportation between stops. Included are hotel pickup, a professional guide, the small boat cruise in Giethoorn, and visits with demonstrations at the cheese, clog, and diamond factories in Zaanse Schans. Lunch and gratuities are not included. Large 40-passenger boats in Giethoorn are available only at extra cost and on separate arrangements.
