Overview

The Gordon River 6-hour morning World Heritage cruise departs daily at 9am from Strahan Wharf on the 35-meter catamaran Harbour Master. The cruise begins by passing through Hells Gates, the narrow entrance from the Southern Ocean into Macquarie Harbour. The boat then continues along the harbour, passing aquaculture pens stocked with thousands of ocean trout and Atlantic salmon. The first stop is Sarah Island, where passengers take a one-hour guided walk to learn about the island’s history as Tasmania's first penal settlement. After returning to the boat, lunch made from Tasmanian produce is served while cruising along the Gordon River through ancient rainforest. The cruise then stops at Heritage Landing, where passengers disembark to walk a boardwalk in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed South West Wilderness. The walk includes views of lichen-covered rainforest and a 2,000-year-old Huon Pine tree. After the walk, the boat returns to Strahan, arriving around 3pm. On-board commentary by the skipper and local guides provides information on natural and historic features throughout the cruise. Morning tea is served on the upper deck before lunch. Main deck and upper deck seating options are available. Drinks and snacks can be purchased on board but are not included. There is no hotel pickup or drop-off service.
