Overview

This full-day coach tour from Seville focuses on the historical development of Granada's Alhambra complex and the adjacent Albaicin neighborhood. The Alhambra, situated on a rocky hill above the Darro River and surrounded by mountains and woods, was originally a military fortress that became the Nasrid kings' royal residence in the 13th century. Visitors enter the site to explore its fortified ramparts, courtyards, and architectural features. The tour includes a stop at the Alcazaba, the military section of the fortress with defensive towers and a concealed entry path. The Nasrid Palaces, built from the early 14th century, comprise three main parts: the Mexuar, used for royal council meetings and court sessions; the Palace of Comares, centered on the Courtyard of the Myrtles with access to the Hall of Ambassadors and Hall of the Boat; and the Palace of the Lions, featuring a central courtyard and multiple halls such as the Hall of the Mocarabes and the Hall of the Abencerrajes, plus the Daraxa viewpoint. Visitors have about three hours to tour the Alhambra and may take time for lunch afterward. The tour also offers an optional walking visit of the Albaicin quarter, a historic neighborhood across from the Alhambra. Its narrow cobblestone streets form a maze of small squares, with balconies decorated with geraniums and numerous fountains. The Albaicin’s design reflects its Arab origins, with quiet streets and frequent views of the Alhambra. The trip lasts about 13 hours and includes a local guide and a tour leader who speaks English and Spanish. Pickup and drop-off are at a meeting point in Seville city center. Entry to the Nasrid Palace, Alcazaba fortress, and Generalife Gardens is included if selected. The Albaicin walking tour is optional and also offered in English and Spanish. Lunch and headphones are not included.

1

The Alhambra

The Alhambra stands on a rocky hill above the River Darro, surrounded by mountains and woods. Originally a military fortress, it was transformed into the royal residence of the Nasrid kingdom in the 13th century by King Mohammed ibn Yusuf Ben Nasr. The site consists of a citadel with high ramparts and defensive towers, housing two main sections: the Alcazaba military area and the medina, where the Nasrid Palaces and remains of noble and commoners’ houses stand. Visitors have about three hours to explore this complex, with time afterward for lunch.
