Overview

This 50-minute boat cruise takes you through the canals of Haarlem, showing several key sights along the way. The tour passes by the Teylers Museum, known for its art, natural history, and science collections housed in a historic building dating back to the 18th century. You will also see Molen de Adriaan, a windmill originally built in 1779, destroyed by fire in 1932, and rebuilt in 2002 as part of Haarlem’s skyline. The route includes a view of Haarlem Railway Station, which opened in 1839 and is a protected monument. The cruise continues past Jopenkerk, a brewery located in a former church building where traditional Haarlem beers are brewed and served. The final notable stop along the canal route is the Frans Hals Museum, which holds a collection of 17th-century paintings and is located in a historic building formerly used as a men’s almshouse. The boat is operated by experienced skippers who provide an audio-guided tour throughout the ride. During summer months, cruises take place on open or semi-open boats, while in winter the boat is covered and heated to maintain comfort. Snacks and drinks are available at the boarding location but are not included in the cruise. Only service animals are allowed on board; other pets are prohibited.

Itinerary

1

Teylers Museum

Teylers Museum in Haarlem is an art, natural history, and science museum founded in 1778. Its neoclassical Oval Room, built in 1784 behind the home of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, is part of the historic core. Pieter Teyler was a wealthy cloth merchant and banker who left his fortune to support religion, art, and science.

2

Molen De Adriaan Museum

De Adriaan is a windmill originally from 1779 that burned down in 1932 and was rebuilt in 2002. It has been a distinct part of Haarlem’s skyline for centuries.

3

Haarlem Railway Station

Opened on September 20, 1839, Haarlem railway station is located on the Amsterdam–Rotterdam railway, the first railway line in the Netherlands. The station building is a designated rijksmonument.

4

Jopenkerk Brewery

Jopen beer began as a project by Stichting Haarlems Biergenootschap in 1992 to revive traditional Haarlem beers. Named after 112-litre beer barrels, it moved brewing locations several times before settling in the former Jacobskerk church, converted into the Jopenkerk brewery, café, and restaurant in 2010.

5

Frans Hals Museum

The Frans Hals Museum, founded in 1862, is located in Haarlem’s former Oude Mannenhuis on the Groot Heiligland. It holds a main collection of 17th-century paintings by Frans Hals and was divided in 1950 when modern art moved to a separate location.
