The desolate mountains and rising volcanic steam create a unique landscape that explains why the area was once called “Hell Valley.” While riding the Hakone Ropeway, you can enjoy spectacular scenery throughout the journey — from Sounzan to Owakudani, the deep valley spreads out below, and from Owakudani toward Togendai, you can admire stunning views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi.

Opening hours and closure dates may change. Kindly check the latest information before your visit February to November: 9:00 to 16:45 (Owakudani Station: 9:00 to 17:00) December to January: 9:00 to 16:15 (all stations) Service may be suspended due to bad weather or regular maintenance. The Hakone Ropeway will suspend service on certain sections due to scheduled maintenance, and substitute bus transportation will be provided for those sections Suspended Section: Sounzan Station – Owakudani Station ・Suspension Period: (1) December 8 (Mon) – December 19 (Fri), 2025 (2) January 13 (Tue) – January 30 (Fri), 2026 (Total of 30 days) The section between Owakudani Station and Togendai Station will operate as usual. ・Suspended Section: Owakudani Station – Ubako Station – Togendai Station Suspension Period: January 31 (Sat) – February 20 (Fri), 2026 (21 days) The section between Sounzan Station and Owakudani Station will operate as usual.
The one-way ticket is valid only for the direction selected at the time of purchase. It can be used from the time of activation until the end of operating hours on the same day. If multiple tickets are purchased in a single transaction, they cannot be used separately and will all be activated at the same time. If you wish to use them individually on different occasions, please make separate purchases. Reservations can be made for up to 24 people, but they must be used by the same group and cannot be used individually. If you need to use the tickets separately, please purchase them individually. All ropeway tickets allow you to get off at any station along the route. Each gondola accommodates up to 18 passengers. The gondolas operate at approximately one-minute intervals. The travel time between each of the four Hakone Ropeway stations is approximately 10 minutes. (Travel time may vary depending on congestion.) Substitute bus service will operate as follows: Sounzan Station – Owakudani Station: approx. 10 minutes one way Owakudani Station – Ubako Station – Togendai Station: approx. 15 minutes one way Buses operate approximately every 15 minutes. Customers holding Hakone Freepass or other eligible transportation tickets may use the substitute bus. Customers without a valid ticket are requested to use the regular Izu Hakone Bus service. The one-way ticket is valid only for the direction selected at the time of purchase. It can be used from the time of activation until the end of operating hours on the same day.

How to get there The Hakone Ropeway has four stations. Sounzan Station, located on the Gora side, serves as the starting point and connects directly to the Hakone Tozan Cable Car. Togendai Station, located on the Lake Ashi side, is a major transfer point with connections to the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (Pirate Ship), Odakyu Highway Bus, and Hakone Tozan Bus. Owakudani Station serves as the transfer station, with separate platforms for the Sounzan and Togendai directions.
