Overview

Afareaitu Waterfalls

The hike covers the sacred Afareaitu valley with lush vegetation including a forest of tree ferns and tropical fruits and flowers. The trail passes archaeological sites such as ancient Polynesian temples, agricultural terraces, and housing platforms. Along rivers lined with flowers, there are natural pools and the Afareaitu Waterfall where bathing is possible. The guide shares local legends linked to the valley, which is called the valley of gods and kings. The trail is medium difficulty on a stony path with some ups and downs and can be slippery when wet. The walk ends with a fresh fruit tasting in a private tropical garden by the river.
