Overview

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island features two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, with volcanic landscapes and rainforest. This small-group tour lasts about five and a half hours and includes visits to several key sites around the park and Hilo. The tour begins with a two-hour stop at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where participants walk along the Kilauea caldera rim to observe volcanic steam vents and recent lava flow formations. Following this, the group hikes through the rainforest to reach Nahuku, or Thurston Lava Tube, a 500-year-old lava cave formed by past volcanic activity. Next is a half-hour visit along Chain of Craters Road to see hardened lava fields and volcanic craters while learning about the geology and history of Kilauea. The tour then heads to Rainbow Falls to view the 80-foot waterfall and surrounding tropical landscape. After a short stop at Big Island Candies, guests can sample handmade chocolates, macadamia nuts, and local coffee. The final stop is at Liliuokalani Gardens for a 20-minute walk around the fishponds and pagodas along Hilo Bay. The tour includes private transportation, a professional guide, snacks, bottled water, and the national park admission fee. Lunch is not provided. Pickup is available from select hotels in Hilo or the port for cruise ship passengers, but not from Kona or Waikoloa. Participants should wear covered walking shoes and bring a jacket, as walking on uneven terrain for about a mile is required. The tour runs in all weather conditions, though seeing molten lava is not guaranteed. Youth aged 10 and older only are allowed, and accessibility is limited for guests with wheelchairs, scooters, or oxygen tanks.
