Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, the oldest officially established game reserve in Africa, covers 96,000 hectares and is known for its population of the African Big 5 as well as wild dogs, cheetahs, and other wildlife. This reserve played a key role in saving rhinos from near extinction in the 1960s when fewer than 100 remained worldwide. The southern section, Umfolozi, was historically used by King Shaka as his personal hunting grounds. This motorized safari lasts about 7 to 8 hours, starting early in the morning. The game ranger will collect guests from their accommodation in St Lucia at 5:00 AM or meet them at the Nyalazi Gate by 6:00 AM. After a briefing about the park and the day's plan, the group sets off to search for animals. Early departures improve the chances of seeing predators when they are most active. The day includes private transportation, breakfast, a bush lunch, bottled water, and blankets provided on the game drive vehicles. Conservation levies for the park are included in the price. Gratuities are not covered. Children under 6 years old are not permitted on this tour.
