Overview

This Howth Safari Hiking Tour lasts about five hours and explores the south facing cliffs and paths of the Howth Peninsula overlooking Dublin Bay. The tour begins in Howth village with a 30-minute breakfast at the House restaurant on Main Street, featuring freshly baked scones, tea, and coffee. The guided walk then follows trails around Shielmartin Hill, passing the Bog of the Frogs and continuing through heathland and heather to reach cliff paths with views of Dublin Bay. Participants will see old Irish goat herds along the route and visit hidden beaches and smugglers caves. The hike continues to Red Rock, where ships crossing Dublin Bay can be observed. From there, the route ascends gently along the cliffs near the Baily Lighthouse, highlighting coastal features shaped by sea erosion. The tour includes a visit to some of Ireland’s less known beaches, located about 30 minutes from Dublin’s center. The final section reaches Howth Summit, offering wide views of Dublin Bay, the Baily Lighthouse, and the Wicklow Mountains, with an option to finish with refreshments at the summit. Alternatively, the tour can end by descending old tramlines back to Howth Harbour and village. The route may change depending on tide and weather conditions. The tour includes a local guide and breakfast. Transportation to Howth is not provided. Participants should be at least 12 years old, children must be accompanied by an adult, and sturdy footwear is required as trails can be soft or wet and are generally not paved.
