Overview

Humantay Lake sits high in the Andes and holds a significant place in Incan mythology. This full-day bus and walking tour from Cusco lasts about 14 and a half hours. Participants are picked up from their hotels in Cusco early in the morning between 3:30 and 4:00 am, traveling by private minivan to Mollepata village, passing through the Apurimac River valley along the two-hour drive. A quick breakfast stop in Mollepata prepares travelers for the hike ahead. After breakfast, the group continues by car for about an hour to Soraypampa at 3,900 meters above sea level. From there, the hike to Humantay Lake at 4,200 meters begins. The steep trail takes roughly one and a half hours on foot. Those who find the climb difficult have the option to ride a horse up to the lake. At the summit, the guide explains the lake’s cultural importance to the Incas, and there is time to take in the views. The return hike descends back to Mollepata, where a lunch with a vegetarian option is served. Afterward, the group travels back to Cusco by private minivan, arriving near Plaza San Francisco around 6 pm. The tour includes a professional guide, entrance fees if selected, hotel pickup, transportation, breakfast and lunch, a walking stick, and emergency medical equipment. Drinks, gratuities, and hotel drop-off are not included. Shared or private tour options are available at booking.
