by VIP Holbox Experience
Isla Holbox is a known seasonal habitat for whale sharks, the largest fish species reaching up to 14 meters long. This wildlife tour lasts about six hours and includes a boat trip where participants can swim alongside these gentle giants. The whale sharks pose no danger, allowing close observation in the water. During the boat ride, other marine and bird species such as turtles, giant manta rays, dolphins, and flamingos may also be spotted. A light breakfast featuring coffee, tea, fruits, yoghurt, and sweet buns is provided before snorkeling. Guests receive snorkeling gear and enjoy a serving of the operator’s ceviche or guacamole or mango as a fish alternative. Cool water and sodas are supplied throughout the trip. This activity depends on the presence of whale sharks, which typically arrive after mid-May, and on good weather conditions. If weather causes cancellation, guests can reschedule or receive a full refund.
Meeting and Boat Departure
Participants meet their guide and group at the office in Isla Holbox at 6:30 am, located one block from the Main ferry pier (not on the beach side). A brief introduction and equipment distribution take place, along with a light breakfast. Then, the group walks to the pier to board the boat for a one to two-hour trip to locate whale sharks. If a giant manta is spotted and its behavior allows, swimming with it is possible. Upon arrival, swimming with the whale sharks occurs in groups of two plus the guide for safety and optimal experience. On the return trip, there is a snorkeling stop at the "cuevones" reef near Cabo Catoche, where sea turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, squids, octopuses, and various reef fish may be seen. Fresh ceviche is prepared during the journey. The boat then stops at Santa Paula for a swim and to enjoy the ceviche before the final 45-minute return to Holbox.
