Overview

This private walking tour in Jaisalmer lasts about 3 to 4 hours and covers the city's historic fort and old town. The tour begins at Jaisalmer Fort, built in 1156 AD by Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, known as the second oldest fort in Rajasthan. The fort sits at former trade route crossroads, including the Silk Road, and remains inhabited by around 4,000 people. Inside, you will see the palace, Jain temples, and get views of the city, along with houses, hotels, and restaurants. From the fort, the guide leads you through narrow alleys of the old city to Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli, a late 19th-century mansion that once belonged to the Prime Minister of Jaisalmer. This building is noted for its unique architecture created by two jeweler brothers who worked independently on each wing, resulting in symmetrical but not identical sides. The intricate carvings were made based on descriptions rather than direct observation. The tour continues to Kothari's Patwon Ki Haveli, a cluster of five adjacent houses built by five Jain brothers in the early 19th century. Constructed from Jaisalmer sandstone, these mansions display elaborate stone lattice work and façades. The outside decorations highlight the wealth of the merchant family who owned them. The guide explains the history of these ornate residences as you explore their detailed exteriors and surroundings. The private guided tour includes the commentary but excludes food, drinks, and transport to or from the sites.
