In Wulajie Manchu Town, more than 30 kilometers north of Jilin City, the Songhua River flows slowly, alluviating a quiet island - Wusong Island. This is the core viewing area of "Jilin Rime", one of the four natural wonders of China. Every winter, it transforms into a silver-clad ice and snow wonderland, interpreting the moving poetry of the northern winter with the unique scenery of jade trees and jade branches. The magic of Wusong Island begins with the exquisite gift of nature. The Fengman Hydropower Station upstream keeps the Songhua River from freezing all year round. When the 4℃ river water meets the severe cold air below -20℃, the river surface continuously evaporates into curling water mist. Under the action of breeze and radiation cooling, the water vapor condenses when it encounters cold, and quietly climbs on the pine and willow branches inside and outside the island, completing the gorgeous transformation from water droplets to ice crystals. Different from the sparse and fragmented ordinary rime, the rime here belongs to crystalline rime, with a loose structure, stretched shape, large thickness, and long duration. Each branch is wrapped in ice crystals, like jade branches hanging down, and silver threads twinkling. Wusong Island is an artwork carved by nature with severe cold and water vapor, and a moving poetic blank space in the northern winter.
