by Chief's Tours Tanzania
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania offers the Machame route, also called the Whisky Route, which is known for its scenic landscapes. This trek takes about seven days and six nights, covering approximately 144 hours. The route passes through dense forests before reaching a ridge that leads through moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. From there, the path goes under the Southern Ice Fields’ glaciated cliffs and eventually connects with the Barafu Route for the final ascent to the summit. The Machame route allows for a more gradual climb compared to other routes, contributing to a higher success rate in reaching the summit. This package includes private transportation and airport transfers, as well as all necessary Kilimanjaro camping equipment. Meals are provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner served during the trek. Additionally, all park fees and taxes are covered. A professional guide with expertise in the area leads the group throughout the trek. Personal expenses such as laundry and alcoholic drinks, visa fees, international travel insurance, tips for guides and crew, and rental of climbing gear are not included. This itinerary does not list specific stop points but follows the standard Machame route progression over the full seven-day period.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, the climber meets a professional guide and transfers to Machame Gate at 1,800 m for registration and park formalities. The trail ascends steadily through rainforest with tall trees, hanging moss, colorful flowers, and wildlife including black-and-white colobus monkeys. This hike introduces the mountain while gaining altitude in a peaceful forest setting. The day ends at Machame Camp at 3,000 m, where the mountain crew prepares dinner and the first overnight on the mountain takes place.

Shira Plateau Trek
The trail leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone with giant heather, volcanic rocks, and open landscapes. Hikers cross the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcanic formations. On clear days, Mount Meru can be seen from here. The gradual climb allows the body to adjust to the increasing altitude before reaching Shira Camp at 3,840 m.
300 min
Lava Tower and Barranco Valley
This acclimatization day features a gradual ascent through alpine terrain to the Lava Tower at 4,630 m, a volcanic rock formation where lunch is taken. After spending time at this high elevation, the route descends into Barranco Valley, which is enclosed by tall cliffs and large senecio plants. This strategy of ascending high and sleeping lower supports acclimatization. Overnight is at Barranco Camp at 3,960 m.
420 min
Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp
The day begins with climbing Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble. From the top, there are views of glaciers, valleys, and Kilimanjaro's southern slopes. The route continues across alpine terrain to Karanga Camp at 4,035 m, where the afternoon is spent resting and acclimatizing for the summit attempt.
300 min
Trek to Barafu Camp
The trek is relatively short but important, reaching Barafu Camp at 4,640 m, the last campsite before the summit. The landscape becomes more rugged and barren at high altitude. After arrival, lunch is served, equipment is organized, a summit briefing is held, and a health check is completed with guides. An early dinner precedes rest for the midnight summit climb.

Summit Ascent and Descent to Mweka
Around midnight, the summit ascent begins under a starry sky. Stella Point at 5,756 m is reached in time for sunrise, then the route continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, Africa's highest point. After photographs, descent is made to Barafu Camp for refreshments, then continues through ecological zones to Mweka Camp at 3,100 m for the final night on the mountain.

Descent to Mweka Gate and Transfer
After the final breakfast on the mountain, the descent passes through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Climbers receive the official Kilimanjaro National Park Summit Certificate. A driver meets the group for transfer back to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, meal, and rest are provided.
