Overview

The tour begins with boarding an air-conditioned bus in Phnom Penh. During the drive to the first stop, a documentary film about Cambodia's recent history is shown. The first visit is to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school converted into Security Prison S21 by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979. Visitors have about 75 minutes to explore the site where thousands were held, interrogated, and tortured. After Tuol Sleng, the bus travels 11 kilometers south to Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, known as the Killing Fields. This stop also allows 75 minutes to walk through the memorial grounds where mass executions and burials took place under the Khmer Rouge regime. Here visitors can see mass graves and the memorial stupa commemorating the victims. Throughout the half-day tour of about five hours, the company provides free WiFi, one bottle of drinking water, and an English-speaking tour assistant to support guests. Entrance fees to both locations and optional audio guides or live guide services at each site are not included in the price. The tour allows visitors to explore both sites at their own pace with available audio guide rentals in multiple languages. The round-trip transport on the air-conditioned bus completes the itinerary.

When booking, the guest must provide their WhatsApp number to receive pick up time details via WhatsApp, or they may ask their hotel reception to call the local number 015745880 the night before the tour to confirm pick up time and location, or send an email one day in advance. The hotel name, address (to distinguish hotels with similar names), and room number must be provided for pick up.
The Killing Fields tour operates as a shared bus tour and punctuality for pickup is required. Free hotel pick up is available for hotels near Riverside, Central Market (excluding Russian BLVD), Wat Phnom, Royal Palace, Independence monument, Aeon Mall, Kirirom, and BKK. Hotels outside the pick up zone due to traffic issues require guests to meet at Night Market Riverside bus station at 8am or 1:30pm or arrange their own transport such as a tuktuk ($2-$5 depending on location). Guests staying at residential addresses within the pick up zone will be directed to a designated hotel for pick up. Hotel location should be confirmed before booking.
Morning tour pick up begins at 8am. Hotels near the riverfront have pick up between 8am and 8:15am; hotels farther away have pick up between 8:15am and 9:00am. Afternoon tour pick up starts at 1:30pm; riverfront hotels are picked up between 1:30pm and 1:45pm, others between 1:45pm and 2:30pm. Guests should be at reception at least 10 minutes early and notify staff they are waiting since the tour assistant will check with reception first. Pick up times may be delayed due to traffic or special events. Transfer durations are approximate.
The tour offers a self-guided visit to the Genocide Museum and Killing Fields using multi-language audio guides, allowing participants to explore at their own pace. This approach accommodates a diverse group and provides an affordable way to understand the sites without relying on English-speaking guides.
Visitors to Prison S21 have three options: rent an audio guide for $5 with interviews and explanations in 12 languages, hire an English-speaking live guide for $3-$5 for a more interactive visit, or explore self-guided with written information. The audio guide has two versions: a 60-minute Highlight version recommended for this tour, and a 120-minute Long version better suited for private tours. Visitors should start promptly, maintain steady progress, avoid lingering too long at any stop, and return to the bus at the designated time. Approximately 80 minutes are allowed for the museum visit, which is generally sufficient; those needing more time should consider a private tour.
There are two options for visiting the Killing Fields: first, rent an audio guide for $3, which includes interviews and detailed explanations in 14 languages (English, Français, Deutsch, Nederlands, Italiano, Español, Pусский, Svenska, 中文, แบบไทย, 한국인, 日本語, Melayu, Tiếng, Việt); second, explore the Killing Fields independently using maps and informational signs that cover locations such as the memorial stupa, mass graves, and excavation sites. Audio guides at both Prison S21 and the Killing Fields are optional.
The scheduled visit time at Prison S21 is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Guests are advised to select the Highlight Audio Tour, which lasts about 50 minutes and follows the red-numbered stops on the guide map. The extensive audio guide, which lasts about 2 hours, is not appropriate for the half-day tour.
Entrance fees are not included in the tour price; guests should prepare small denomination notes for entrance fees and audio guide rentals.
Guests should select the option that fits their preferences and budget. The bus tour differs from a tuktuk tour by offering air-conditioned transport, an English-speaking bus attendant for general assistance, onboard audio commentary and documentaries, Wi-Fi, and drinking water. Although more expensive than a tuktuk, the tour focuses on comfort, safety, and a more comprehensive experience.
