Chinese Fishing Nets

These stationary lift nets, also called Cheena vala, are fixed installations along the shore in Kochi. Each net stretches about 20 meters across and is supported by structures at least 10 meters tall. Large stones act as counterweights at one end, balanced by a horizontal net suspended over the sea. Teams of up to six fishermen operate each net. This fishing method was introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century and is unique to Kochi and Kollam in India.
