Overview

Start your day with a peaceful and authentic temple experience at Higashi Honganji, one of Kyoto’s most important Buddhist temples. Every morning at 7:00 AM, local monks hold a traditional Buddhist morning service inside the temple’s Amida Hall and Founder’s Hall. Unlike tourist performances or staged cultural shows, this is a real daily practice that has continued for generations in Kyoto. Together with a local guide, quietly enter the temple grounds in the calm early morning atmosphere before the crowds arrive. During the service, hear traditional Buddhist chanting, hymns, and prayers performed by monks of the Otani branch of Shin Buddhism.
