Overview

The hike to La Leona Waterfall offers about three to four hours of walking through the rainforest near Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. The trail is 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) one way, totaling 6 kilometers roundtrip, and includes some elevation climbs, narrow singletrack paths, and cave crossings. To reach the waterfall, participants will also swim across a 25-meter stretch of water, wearing shoes as required. The tour starts at one of three meeting times: 8:45 AM, 10:45 AM, or 12:45 PM, at the operator's office in Curubande, which is about 20 minutes north of Liberia downtown, passing through Colorado and Curubande villages. A 4WD vehicle covers the first 1 kilometer from Curubande to the trailhead. Guests can safely park their cars in a private lot at the office before the hike begins. This route passes through part of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area, known for its variety of plants and animals in a natural rainforest environment. Entrance fees, dry bags to keep belongings dry, and life vests for the swim are included. Transportation to the meeting point is not included but can be arranged separately.

La Leona Waterfall

The day begins by meeting at the office located 20 minutes north of Liberia downtown, passing through the villages of Colorado and Curubande, with start times at 8:45 AM, 10:45 AM, or 12:45 PM. A private parking lot is available at the office in Curubande to leave vehicles securely during the hike. From Curubande, a 4WD vehicle covers 1 kilometer to reach the entrance of the waterfall trail, where the hike starts. The trail is a 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) singletrack one-way path, making a total of 6 kilometers round trip. Along the way, hikers will encounter some elevation climbs and caves to cross. To access the waterfall, a 25-meter swim is required.
