4

Campanile di Giotto

Observe the free-standing bell tower belonging to the Florence Cathedral complex. The tower's unusual alignment with the facade emphasizes verticality at the center of the Insula Episcopalis and likely allows an unobstructed view of the apse for the large dome, planned since Arnolfian's project. Giotto designed the tower with a pyramidal cusp 50 Florentine arms high, about 40 metres, aiming for a total height near 120-125 metres. A drawing in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena may have been inspired by this design.

Mercato Centrale

Visit this large market established during the late 19th century risanamento period. Inside are fresh Tuscan ingredients including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and spices. Outside stalls sell leather goods.
