Overview

The Marble Tour in Vila Viçosa lasts about two to three hours and takes place in the Evora District of Portugal, within the Alentejo region. The tour begins at the Núcleo Documental do Mármore in Vila Viçosa, where visitors receive an introduction to the geography, geology, and history of marble production in the area. This first stop includes a presentation of different types of stone and explanations about the extraction processes, machinery used, hazards involved, and the economic and artistic importance of marble. After this, participants travel by their own vehicle to a nearby marble quarry to see how marble is extracted. The visit continues to a workshop where the manual and artisanal transformation of marble is demonstrated, including the techniques, tools, and personal stories of the craftsmen. The final stop is a marble sawmill and industrial processing workshop, where mechanized processing methods and various machines are shown, along with examples of finished marble products. Safety equipment, including a helmet and vest, is provided and must be worn during visits to the quarry and workshop; these are returned at the end of the tour. Closed footwear is mandatory. A professional but informal local guide leads the tour. Transportation between the meeting point and the different sites is not included, so participants must use their own vehicles. The locations visited are in the municipalities of Vila Viçosa and Borba, about 50 minutes from Évora and two hours from Lisbon.
