by Matcha Kimono Tea Ceremony in Tokyo
This 90-minute workshop takes place in Tokyo and combines four aspects of Japanese culture: the tea ceremony, teaism, matcha, and kimono wearing. The session begins with participants putting on an easy-to-wear kimono, which takes about five minutes. Next, there is a lecture covering the history and philosophy of the tea ceremony, details about Japanese matcha production, and a comparison between Japanese matcha and teas from other countries. After the lecture, participants learn how to prepare a bowl of straight matcha themselves, practicing the proper technique to make it at home. The workshop also includes instruction on basic tea ceremony etiquette and information about the agricultural value and health benefits of matcha from a scientific perspective. A native English speaker leads the session, allowing attendees to ask questions freely. Included in the workshop are snacks, tea and coffee, rental of tea ceremony tools, and kimono rental. Private transportation is not included. The workshop accommodates over 1500 guests annually. Participants should wear socks in the tatami room; socks can be purchased on site if needed. Children attending are charged the full price. Reservations are automatically canceled without refund if participants arrive more than 10 minutes late.
