Overview

Memphis has a history marked by unsettling events and ghost stories, especially in the South Main Historic District, where many old buildings still stand. This 90-minute walking tour visits several haunted locations while a guide shares their stories. The route begins outside the Orpheum Theatre, known for the ghost of a 12-year-old girl named Mary, who has been reported since 1921. Next, the walk proceeds to the John Alexander Austin House, a Victorian mansion linked to a tragic love story, viewed from outside. The tour also includes a visit inside Earnestine & Hazel's, a former brothel considered one of Memphis’s most haunted places, featuring ghosts and a haunted jukebox. This stop is accessible only from Wednesday to Sunday. Additional stops include the outside of a haunted gangster’s hideout and a location connected to voodoo and hoodoo practices. The final stop is outside the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, which occupies the site of Memphis’ oldest former cemetery, Morris Cemetery. The tour covers about two miles on public sidewalks with some elevation and is conducted mainly outdoors. It includes local taxes and a guide, but does not provide transportation or entrance into buildings except Earnestine & Hazel’s on specified days. Guests can choose to return to Beale Street on their own or with the guide after the tour ends.
