Overview

Panama City sits beside the Panama Canal, a key waterway connecting two oceans. This boat safari starts with a pickup in Panama City before heading to Gatun Lake, a large manmade lake essential to the canal's operation. Guests board a covered motorboat for a 4.5-hour trip that includes a wildlife safari through the lake's channels and jungle edges. The boat passes large cargo ships on the canal while detouring into quieter backwaters where animals such as capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, sloths, toucans, iguanas, crocodiles, and basilisk lizards can be seen. The boat ride includes a 90-minute cruise around Gatun Lake's islands formed during canal construction, with close views of monkeys on the Monkey Islands. After the canal and lake tour, the group visits Casco Viejo, Panama City's historic district. Here, a buffet-style Panamanian brunch is served, featuring dishes like pollo guisado, carimañolas, empanadas, hojaldres, local queso blanco, tropical fruits, fresh juices, and Panamanian coffee. Vegetarian options are available. In case of rain, the brunch and cultural storytelling take place indoors at Restaurante El Nacional in a colonial-style dining room. The tour is led by an English-speaking nature guide and includes bottled water, binoculars, in-vehicle air conditioning, and the boat ride. The full experience lasts about four and a half hours and requires a minimum age of three years. This trip does not include lock or visitor center stops and does not provide airport pickups. Additional transport fees apply for pickups from Playa Bonita hotels. The tour runs in all weather, and guests should be prepared to get wet if it rains.
