Overview

The Montreal Essential 101 Non-Touristy Walking Tour by Spade & Palacio lasts two hours and forty-five minutes. The tour begins at a central square near Notre-Dame Basilica, where the guide spends about ten minutes explaining the eclectic architecture around the area. The group then enters the Basilica, spending fifteen minutes learning about its design and history, with some free time to explore independently. Next, the tour continues on foot for about one hour through Old Montreal, including a visit to the area known as the old Wall Street of Canada. The guide shares information about local cultural events and the early history of the city. After this, participants walk for fifteen minutes through a section of the world’s largest underground network, moving from the World Trade Center to Chinatown. In Chinatown, there is a fifteen-minute stop at a local bakery to pick up a snack to take along while walking through the pedestrian mall. The tour then proceeds to the former Red Light District, now an entertainment area, where for twenty minutes the group sees street art from a large festival, visits a three-floor thrift store and art gallery, and hears about the neighborhood’s history and immigration waves. There is an additional ten minutes of free time inside the thrift store before continuing. The final twenty minutes take place in a borough known for its high concentration of artists, where the group views about a dozen murals and artworks from the MURAL Festival. The guide points out local shops and places to visit independently. The tour concludes with a break at a coffee shop serving locally roasted coffee, where the guide provides a personalized list of recommendations. The tour is led by local guides Spade and Palacio and includes snacks, beverages, and food tastings. Participants should be prepared for moderate walking and wear comfortable shoes. The tour operates in all weather conditions and is suitable for ages five and up.
