Montserrat
Montserrat is a mountain monastery set atop a unique rocky formation, the highest point in the Catalan lowlands. It features the Black Madonna statue, which according to legend was found by Benedictine monks who built the monastery around it. Montserrat became a National Park in 1987 and is a pilgrimage site worldwide. According to legend, monks built the monastery around the statue. Over 70 monks still live there. The basilica began construction in the 16th century and now contains an art museum. La Escolania, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, performs during religious ceremonies and can be heard on the 9.30 am tour.
