Overview

This small-group walking tour in Naples lasts about two and a half hours and includes admission to the Sansevero Chapel and the Santa Chiara Cloister. The group meets in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, near the tourist information office in front of the Church of Gesù Nuovo. The tour moves through the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a local expert guiding the way. Participants visit several important landmarks starting with the Church of Gesù Nuovo, a 16th-century building with ornate architecture. The route continues along Spaccanapoli, a main street dividing the old city, lined with shops and alleys. The tour includes stops in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore and Piazza San Gaetano, the oldest square in Naples, surrounded by the churches of San Lorenzo Maggiore and San Paolo Maggiore. The group spends time inside the Santa Chiara Complex, including the Gothic-style church remodeled in Baroque style and the cloister decorated with majolica tiles. Note that the cloister is closed on Sunday afternoons, so an option with only the Sansevero Chapel entrance is available on those days. The highlight is the Sansevero Chapel, home to the 18th-century marble sculpture "Veiled Christ" by Giuseppe Sanmartino. The statue shows Christ covered by a marble veil, with a legend about an alchemist's secret technique. The tour also includes visits to Via dei Tribunali, the ancient Roman road, the Statue of the Nile God, and Via San Gregorio Armeno, famous for its nativity workshops. A short break includes time for a typical Neapolitan coffee. The final stop is the Naples Cathedral, or Duomo di Napoli, dating from the 13th century and known for housing the blood of the city's patron saint, Saint Gennaro. Photography is not allowed inside the Sansevero Chapel, and pets are not permitted inside the chapel or cloister.
