Overview

This tour covers about two miles on foot through Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans and lasts approximately two hours. The cemetery, located on 127 acres, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was once a racetrack. The guide leads visitors beneath nearly 1,000 trees while pointing out the elaborate mausoleums and marble tombs of notable millionaires such as Al Copeland, founder of Popeyes, and Ruth Fertel, founder of Ruth’s Chris Steak House, as well as writer Anne Rice. The tour highlights include distinctive monuments like a pyramid guarded by a sphinx, an Islamic-style tomb built by a Confederate general for his daughter, the grave of a well-known gambler, and the tomb of a Storyville madam who was removed from her resting place. Visitors will also see the famous weeping angel statue that appears blue under certain light. The guide, Sally Asher, is a professional photographer and writer who shares detailed stories about the people buried here and the unusual history connected to the cemetery.
