Overview

This walking tour in San Juan covers the main historic sites of Old San Juan and includes entry to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Over about two and a half hours, a certified bilingual guide leads the group through the colorful streets and landmarks of the old city. The tour begins at Plaza Darsenas where participants meet near the fountain by La Casita de Rones. It continues to Plaza de Hostos, the original entry to Old San Juan, then to a viewpoint built to defend the bay with cannon fire. The walk includes stops at La Casa Estrecha, the narrowest building in North America, and the 18th-century Capilla del Santo Cristo de la Salud chapel, built on the site of a reported miracle. The route passes by La Fortaleza, the Governor's mansion, with exterior views of this World Heritage Site. Inside the San Juan Cathedral, one of the oldest in the Americas, the guide shows the tombs of Juan Ponce de León and the first New World bishop, Alonso Manso. Participants also visit the La Rogativa sculpture commemorating a 1797 procession during a British attack, the San Juan Gate with its sentry box, and Casa Blanca Museum, the 16th-century residence of the Ponce de León family. The tour concludes with a 45-minute guided visit inside El Morro Fort, where guests learn about its military history and may take a break with access to bathrooms and water. Bottled water is provided, but sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and suitable walking shoes are not included. This tour is not advised for travelers with mobility issues.
