Overview

Paestum was founded as the Greek city of Poseidonia and became a major center of Magna Graecia, located near the Sele River on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast. This small-group walking tour lasts about two hours and is led by a professional archaeologist who guides up to 20 participants through the site. The tour includes skip-the-line entry to the archaeological park. The visit covers the main ruins at Paestum, including three Doric temples, the amphitheater, the forum, and the ancient markets. Highlights include the Temple of Hera II, sometimes called the Temple of Poseidon, and the nearby Temple of Athena, also known as the Temple of Ceres, both dating back to around 500 BC. After exploring the outdoor ruins, the tour proceeds to the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum. At the museum, visitors see a collection of Greek artworks from the region dating to the 7th century BC. The museum’s key exhibit is the frescoes from the Tomb of the Diver. This tour does not include transportation or food and drinks, so travelers should plan accordingly.
