The vessel departs from the north end of the Gaillard Cut, a channel carved through the Continental Divide. While traveling south, the boat passes under the Centennial Bridge, which spans the canal. Next, the vessel enters the Pedro Miguel Locks, one of the two lock sets on the Pacific side. After passing through these locks, the boat crosses Miraflores Lake, an artificial freshwater lake between Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks. The final lock on the Pacific side is Miraflores Locks. Once through Miraflores Locks, the vessel enters the Pacific Ocean. The M/V Pacific Queen offers both open and air-conditioned decks for passenger comfort.
