After about an hour on the highway, the tour visits the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a 140-acre refuge for injured, orphaned, and ill animals that cannot survive in the wild. Visitors walk through the center to see animals such as brown and black bears, wolves, wood bison, and moose. Following the wildlife center visit, participants board the mv Ptarmigan for a one-hour cruise to the face of Portage Glacier. The boat approaches within 300 yards of the glacier, allowing observation of icebergs breaking off and falling into the water. A Park Service Ranger is on board to provide information during the cruise. At 5:30 p.m., a shuttle picks up the group from the boat for the return trip to Anchorage, with additional photo stops along the way. The entire tour lasts about five and a half hours and includes pickup and drop-off at designated meeting points. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and weather can change rapidly, so dressing accordingly is advised.
